How to create Categories and Subcategories in WordPress?
There are two ways to create categories and subcategories in your WordPress website.
In the first method, you create the categories from the menu option of your WordPress.
This method is useful when you create categories before adding any post to your WordPress website.
However, in the second method you can add the categories when you are creating your post or by simply editing the existing post.
So, let’s learn both the ways one-by-one.
1. Creating Categories and Subcategories From Menus Of WordPress
Go to the WordPress dashboard and then head over to posts and then select the categories option.
After you click on categories you will see a page as shown below.
On the left hand side of the page you can add a new category and on the right side you see all the categories that you have made.
Let’s discuss all the sections one by one that are on the left side of the page where you can add a new category.
Name:- The name of your category.
Slug:- When you create a name of the category WordPress will automatically create a slug for your category. However, you can always rename the slug if you want to.
Parent Category:- Make sure you do not select anything in the parent category when you are creating a parent category. This section is used when you are creating a child category or subcategory under your category.
Description:- You can also add a description about your category in the description section when creating a category.
After you fill all the details of the category click on add new category.
The new category is now created and you can check it on the right side of the page.
To create a subcategory you need to follow the same steps that you followed while creating a category.
However, When you are creating a sub category you need to select the parent category under which you want to add the child category.
For example:- If you are creating a child category “equipments” under the category “Volleyball”, you will have to select volleyball in the parent category.
2. Creating Categories and Subcategories by Editing a Post
Using this method you can create categories and subcategories when you create a new post or by editing the older posts.
To create categories head over to the posts section and then click on edit post.
On the right sidebar of your blog post click on post. After clicking on the post scroll down and you will see the categories section.
In the categories section you can add a new category as well as subcategory on your blog.
To create category Fill the name of the category as we did earlier in the first method.
And then click on the “add new category” button. The new category is now added to your blog.
While creating the category leave the parent category option blank.
To create a subcategory you need to follow the same steps.
However, you must add the parent category under which you want to place the subcategory.
When you write a child post that would come under the Subcategory section make sure to add it only in the subcategory avoiding to include it under the category section.
Are you confused? Let me explain to you with an example:- as we created a category “volleyball” and the subcategory as “equipment.”
Now when you write a post on “equipments” you should include the post only in the equipment subcategory avoiding it to include it under the volleyball category also.
To understand properly look in the picture below
If you include the post in both:- category and subcategory, it will create a duplicate content on your website which would decrease your websites ranking as well as traffic.
